Big beaks earn big respect

Stellers Sea Eagle at the National Aviary in Pittsburgh. I made this image on my 11-24-2009 trip to the aviary.

Steller’s Sea Eagles are native to coastal areas around the Sea of Okhotsk in Russia, south to the island of Hokkaido, Japan. They are in near-threatened status in the wild with their population steadily declining due to habitat degradation, pollution, poisoning by lead shot, and over-fishing. It is estimated that there are only around 5,000 Steller’s Sea Eagles in the wild.
