White-headed Whattled Lapwing from my Saturday 1-17-2009 trip the National Aviary in Pittsburgh, PA. This species lives near large rivers with sandy riverbanks and islands throughout Africa. It feeds on insects and small invertebrates. Lapwings are sedentary birds, but during periods of flooding they leave the river and move to drier grounds. They are plentiful in the wild.
